Gematria is a system of assigning numerical values to Hebrew words and phrases, and using the values in interpretation. It is used both as a mnemonic device for memorizing teachings from the Torah, as well as an exegetical tool for discovering hidden meanings in the text.
The basis for Gematria is that each letter of the Alef-Bet (Hebrew alphabet) has a numerical value. Letters do not change their value when used in combinations with other letters. For example, the letter א (Alef) has a numerical value of 1; ב (Bet) has a numerical value of 2; and ג (Gimel) has a numerical value of 3. When combined, these numbers form simple patterns or code that can be decoded to uncover hidden meanings within the text.
The simplest form of Gematria is called Notarikon, which assigns each word in scripture an individual numerical value. For example, if we take the Hebrew phrase "the land will be filled with knowledge", each word would have its own number: " הארץ 8 + יאמלך 130 + תמים430 = 568" By adding these numbers together (8+130+430=568), we can arrive at the overall Gematria of that phrase which holds true for any combination of Hebrew words or phrases placed into Notarikon calculation.
More intricate forms of Gematria include Atbash and Temurah — two systems used to decode deeper spiritual truths found within scripture. Both systems rely on specific formulas that substitute letters or words based on their numeric values, allowing us to unlock even more meaning behind many scriptural passages.
